Custom Design Process

The Schooley’s commissioned me to paint a second mural for them. They had purchased a new home, a Boston Brownstone, and found that the unit felt a little dark and confining. They wanted to do something that literally opened up that walled-in feeling. The only available wall on the living level was in their dining area. They had an old cabinet that they had owned for many years and somehow wanted to incorporate it into the design. So together we designed the idea of having a Trompe L’oeil mural depicting a raw hole in the wall with tropical plants bursting through. We chose tropical plants because their décor in the open concept space was sort of British Colonial and exotic. I painted the back of the cabinet to match the mural and made it appear that it had a glass backing with the scene behind showing through. While executing the design I painted a depiction of a scroll with a poem. It was hidden behind the cabinet and could only be seen when the cabinet was moved. These photos show the process from design through completion.
